PROJECT OVERVIEW
Each year in late May or early June the students on the Hornets Team at Mill Pond School hold their culminating, interdisciplinary event: the United Nations Summit. The Summit focuses students on an important global concern each year. Past focuses include the state of the world's water, poverty and hunger, and global climate change.
Each year in late May or early June the students on the Hornets Team at Mill Pond School hold their culminating, interdisciplinary event: the United Nations Summit. The Summit focuses students on an important global concern each year. Past focuses include the state of the world's water, poverty and hunger, and global climate change.

On the day of the U.N. Summit, the grade six students play the role of an important historic or contemporary world figure, representing various regions and points of view from around the world. Following a brief parade around the school, students engage in roundtable discussions in the cafeteria with a focus on the Summit's specific global concern and its relationship to other world problems. Students then brainstorm possible solutions to address this concern and present them in the form of United Nations "resolutions." A number of honored guests serve as "expert observers" at the roundtables including community members, faculty & staff, school administration, and representatives from local service organizations.

Following the roundtable discussions students and guests adjourn to the auditorium to participate in a "press conference" for members of school community. At the press conference, the outcomes and resolutions developed at each roundtable are shared by student representatives. In addition, guests are honored and students are recognized for the service work they have done throughout the year.
Finally, the day concludes with a "Global Feast" facilitated by parent volunteers. Our hungry world leaders have an opportunity to sample foods from a variety of cultures throughout the globe.
