I strongly recommend the I Survived books, because once you start reading one of the books you won't want to put it down. I really enjoy these books because, they start with a lot of action. I also like that they teach you about major events that occurred. The main characters in these books are children just about the ages of our Mill Pond students, so they are easy to connect to. If you have not read one of these books, I hope you give one a chance soon.....
It's a fun fictional book with a main character the same age as Mill Pond students - Peter Fortune. He has very vivid daydreams which lead to some interesting situations. I like that each chapter is its own short story about Peter. I highly recommend the second chapter, The Dolls!
I am currently reading Out of My Mind, a realistic-fiction novel, again for the second time as we have the Sharon Draper virtual visit this month. I am enjoying the point of view that the story is told in and learning more about the main character Melody and her journey of self-discovery.
I recently read Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus by Dusti Bowling. It is the story of a girl who was born with no arms starting middle school in a new state after her family makes a big move. The main character, Aven, tells her story with humor and frankness. Not only is she trying to get used to a new place and school she is trying to make friends despite being different. I'm excited to follow Aven onto high school in the sequel, Momentous Events in the Life of a Cactus.
